By this rapid increase of international students’ Canadian government also gets under pressure of housing, healthcare, and other basic services and not able to provide basic amenities to everyone. Now let’s discuss what are the new rules or requirements for international students?
1. Increased Living Expenses
In 2024, the Canadian government increased the GIC amount from 10,000 CAD to 20,635 CAD. Rising inflation and living expenses in the country are the main reasons behind it.2. Limiting the number of student visa by putting a cap
On January 22,2024 the IRCC announced that for the year 2024 the cap for study permits will be approximately 3,60,000 but until recently it was not limited to any number you just needed a Letter of Acceptance to apply for Visa.3. Changes in Post Graduation work permits
· In 2024, IRCC confirmed that the international graduates of college programs delivered through public-private institution would be no longer eligible for post study work permits.· Graduates of at least 2-year programs from PGWP qualified institutions and master’s degree students are eligible for PGWP.
4. Work permits for Spouses.
Spousal open work permits will be limited only to the spouses of international students who are pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees. The spouses of students who are in undergraduate and diplomas are not eligible for open work permits.5. Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
Effective from January 22, 2024, for new study permits students require PAL to apply for student visa from the province or territory where the students want to study. But there are some students who are exempted from this requirement, that is, the students who are going for master’s or doctoral degrees..
